Kathy Conroy
Kathy was born in Memphis, Tennessee and have lived in Colorado, Massachusetts, and currently she resides in Kentucky. She has been an artist most of my life and have extensive experience in acrylics, gouache, watercolor, and colored pencils, with her favorite subjects being birds and wildlife of all kinds and most recently, human portraits and pet portraits.
While obtaining an art degree at the Art Institute of Cincinnati (Formerly ACA College of Design), Kathy learned the technique of scratchboard. It has become my favorite medium in that it allows a level of fine detail that she can’t obtain with other mediums. Kathy spends many hours photographing horses, birds, wildlife, trees, flowers and anything related to nature to use as subjects in her work.
Over the years, her techniques have become honed and refined, with my tools-of-choice being surgical scalpels, tattoo needles, and xacto blades. She has recently branched out into human portraits and bas-relief representations.
Kathy has been featured on KET, Kentucky’s PBS network, various news stations in Kentucky and have had featured articles in several art magazines. She has won several art awards with shows and exhibits around Kentucky and with the International Society of Scratchboard Artists.
Kathy is a juried member of the Kentucky Arts Council – Kentucky Crafted, a Signature member with the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA), a juried member of the Louisville Artisans Guild, Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. She teaches 2-3 “Introduction to Scratchboard” and “Portraits in Scratchboard” classes each year in the Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio Region.
